4 Tips for Managing a Water Emergency

No one wants to come home or even wake up, for that matter, to a water-related emergency. Sadly, thousands of people experience such emergencies at home that require fast thinking and a proactive response to help them get rectified.

Water emergency

Imagine if your home was suddenly flooded from external drains, internal plumbing, or extreme rainfall in your area. Would you be able to identify the signs and take the necessary steps to mitigate the damage? Being prepared with these tips can help you respond promptly and responsibly, potentially saving you from a major disaster.

Turn The Water Off

If you don’t already know where your stopcock is or your water shut-off valve, then you need to find it and know how to turn the water off. Because you’re experiencing food in your home, then you need to stop the water flow as fast as possible. In older homes, these are usually located under the sink. In more modern buildings, they can usually still be found in the kitchen, but as a blue switch, you can simply turn it off like a lightswitch. Know where it is and how to turn it off before you need to know.

Turn Off Electrics

Depending on the severity of the flood, you might need to switch off the electrics in your home to avoid electrocution or further damage to your electrical circuit. In the first instance, you need to stop the flow of water and turn the electricity off in whichever order is the most urgent based on the location of the flood. This is the safest option until you get to the root of the problem and get it fixed.

Call An Emergency Plumber

Once you have stopped the leak and made your home as safe as you can, you need to call for the services of an emergency plumber. Emergency plumbers will prioritise jobs to get you the help you need as soon as possible. Don’t try to fix the problem yourself; you could unintentionally make things much worse. Get yourself to a safe place if you need to or clean up the problem, i.e., remove water from a floor via a leak in the ceiling or clean out under the kitchen sink if you have a water emergency via your kitchen plumbing but avoid the temptation to attempt to rectify the issue yourself.

Clear the Water Pipes

If you want, once you have shut off the water supply, you can clear the pipes by running taps to remove any lingering water from them and make things as easy as possible to repair once your plumber arrives. If there is a blockage or a leak, you can try to dislodge it if it’s safe to do so to help you prepare for your plumber’s arrival.

Unfortunately, water damage at home can occur no matter how careful you are. But remember, knowing how to respond in the event of an emergency can support your recovery from the incident and help you make the best of a bad situation. There is always a way to bounce back.
