Does your elderly relative need taking care of? The reason that we ask this question is because a lot of the time when someone needs taking care of, the first place that is looked is the family. There’s nothing wrong with asking family members to take care of someone who needs it of course, but that doesn’t mean that everyone is going to be in a position to take someone in. if someone asks you to do this, you need to think this through. You can’t just blindly agree without thinking it through or knowing the ins and outs of what is going to be needed from you. Down below, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the things that we suggest you think about, so keep reading down below if you would like to find out more.
Do You Have The Time?

First, you need to ask yourself if you have the time to look after an elderly relative. If you already have a career and a family, you may not have the time to spend at home taking care of them. We know that it can feel mean to say that you don’t have the time to look after them, but sometimes that’s just the reality of life. If you stop working, you’re not going to be earning any money to keep yourself afloat, and that’s not fair to expect of someone.
It might be the case that you do not have the time, but your partner does. If this is the case, then you need to sit down and have a chat with them. You cannot simply expect them to be okay with this without talking to them first, as it’s their time that they are going to have to dedicate to looking after them. So, talk it all through, explain how it would work etc, and you can have a discussion about what the best way to move forward is.
Do You Have The Money?
It’s true to say that there are some elderly people who have their own money, but some do not. Some really struggle on what they do have though as they might not have a lot to go around. So, you need to ask yourself if you have the money to support an extra person. Sure, they will contribute to the running of your house and food etc, but that’s still a lot of extra money that you’re going to need. It’s going to be more gas to take them to appointments, more food, more bills and so much more. Also, when you want to do something as a family, you will either take them with you or find someone to look after them while you are gone, both of which you are going to have to pay for.
What Is Your Relationship With Them?
We know that this sounds horrible to say, but we do encourage you to look at your relationship with the relative in question. The reason that we say this is because it’s a little different if it’s an immediate family member or a long lost aunt that you’ve never really spent any time with. If it’s the latter, then you should not feel any obligation to take them in and take care of them, especially if you don’t really know them. To be honest, you don’t have an obligation to anyone, even though it may feel this way with your parents.
If you have a strong relationship with your parents then you are more likely to want to take care of them, so there is that to consider. But, you should never feel as though you have to just because they took care of you. That was their job, this is not yours if you do not have the ability to do so.
How Much Care Do They Need?

An important consideration in all of this is how much care they need. If they need round the clock care that requires you to handle medicine and other things like this, then that may not be something that you can offer. It’s one thing to open your home to someone who just needs a little bit of help here and there than it is for someone who needs a lot of care. We’re not saying that you shouldn’t do it because of this, but you do need to think through if you can give them what they need. What if you can’t? What is the point of having them live with you if you can’t provide them with the care that they need?
If you know that you are unable to provide this, then perhaps you can find them a nursing home to live in. Ensure that you are doing your research into nursing homes that scored poorly as well as those that scored highly. You need to know where not to send your relative and that should help you choose where they do end up.
Are You Mentally Able To Cope?
The final thing that we’re going to say is that you need to think about whether you will mentally be able to cope with one more person, no matter who it is. Or, will you be able to cope with the specific person that needs caring for? If you do not think that you will be able to cope mentally, then the answer is no. You cannot do this at the expense of your mental health, it’s not fair to you.
There are going to be times where one of your elderly relatives needs taking care of, but that does not mean that you have to do it. We do not want you to feel forced into anything, and we don’t want you to feel as though you have to give up your whole life for your relatives. If you do decide to take on this task, then we’re happy for you and we hope that you feel good about doing something good. If you don’t, that’s okay and we’re glad that you have put your and your family needs first.
