The Comfort of Autumn and Cosy Evenings

One of my favourite things about autumn is the food. There’s something inherently cosy and comforting about this season, with its cooler air and rich, warm flavours that feel like a hug in a bowl. The flavours of autumn are simply irresistible: think cinnamon, maple syrup, honey, and pumpkin. It’s not just about the food itself; it’s the feeling that comes with it. From the smell of a pumpkin pie baking in the oven to the comforting taste of a hot spiced latte, autumn meals evoke a special kind of nostalgia that makes me fall in love with this season all over again.

However, there’s one thing I find a little tough about this time of year: the shorter days. With the clocks going back and the evenings arriving much earlier, I often feel like there’s less time to do everything I want. When it’s dark by 5 PM, it can be a bit of a challenge to stay motivated and find things to do. I’m not a big fan of watching TV, so spending the entire evening in front of a screen isn’t my idea of relaxation.

Finding Entertainment: Little Games

Culinary School games

That said, I’ve found one great way to pass the time and keep myself entertained in the evenings: playing little games on my phone. I recently stumbled across a website called Culinary Schools, which, despite its name, offers more than just information about cooking schools. It has a variety of fun and free food-related games, and I’ve found them to be a surprisingly enjoyable way to unwind.

One of my favourites is a game called Coffee Shop, where you take on the role of a café owner. The goal is to purchase all the ingredients for the coffee, set the prices, and then see how well your coffee shop does with customers. The twist? You need to pay attention to the weather forecast to determine how much coffee, milk, and sugar to stock up on each day. The challenge is balancing inventory, pricing, and customer demand to maximise profits. It sounds simple, but it’s actually quite addictive once you get into it. There’s something satisfying about trying to perfect your coffee-selling strategy, and it keeps me entertained without requiring too much mental effort.

A Handy Tool for Cooks: Conversion Calculators

Interestingly, I originally found Culinary Schools because I was looking for a quick and easy way to convert measurements for some American recipes. As someone who enjoys baking and cooking, I often come across recipes from the U.S., where measurements are quite different from what we use here in the UK. We don’t do a lot with pumpkins besides carving them, which seems so wasteful. But with the rise of pumpkin spice and all things autumn-inspired, I’ve been eager to try more American-style recipes that feature this festive ingredient.

This is where the website has been incredibly helpful. Their simple and effective conversion calculators cover a wide range of measurements and are a lifesaver for anyone who cooks or bakes with recipes from different countries. Whether you’re trying to figure out how many millilitres are in a cup, how many tablespoons equal a fluid ounce, or even how to convert calories into kilojoules, this site has you covered.

Here are just a few of the conversions available on the site:

– Teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, and millilitres
– Fluid ounces, cups, teacups, and glasses
– Cups to wine glasses, and shot glasses to ounces
– Gallons and litres
– Pounds and kilograms
– Calories and kilojoules

It’s a really versatile tool that makes cross-referencing different recipes a breeze, and I find myself using it frequently.

A Resource for Global Recipes

What’s even better is that this page is perfect for anyone who enjoys cooking international dishes. Since recipes from different countries use varying units of measurement, it can sometimes be a challenge to follow along. But thanks to Culinary Schools conversion calculators, I can switch between American and European measurements with ease. It has saved me a lot of time and frustration, especially when I’m working with ingredients like flour or butter that can vary greatly depending on where you’re cooking.
