Large rooms are something that most of us look for when it comes to finding our forever homes. We’re talking high ceilings, generous floor space, and a world of potential.
But one thing you might not anticipate is that large rooms and high ceilings can also lead to some pretty cold feelings. As well as being literally cold, these larger spaces simply lack the cosiness you might want from areas like your living room.

That’s not to say you need to settle for tiny rooms to feel snug in your home, but it does highlight the need to actively inject cosy touches to make that larger space work for you. And we’ve got some top tips to help you do precisely that.
# 1 – Warm it Up
Large rooms are naturally harder to heat than small spaces, and high ceilings are particularly notorious for this purpose. Unfortunately, a cool breeze coming from above is a real bummer when you’re trying to get cosy. That’s why our first piece of advice is to simply warm it up.
There are a number of ways you can do this, including installing high radiators that, as well as looking like a striking design choice, ensure far better heat coverage. Alternatively, options like gas fireplaces are fantastic centrepieces, while also providing a more constant, cosy heat. With your large ceilings in mind, simply opt for gas fires for sale with high efficiency ratings, as these can significantly minimise heat loss. And, what could be more cosy than snuggling up by the fire on an evening?
# 2 – Think About Ceiling Additions
Most of us spend time thinking about how to increase space at home, but the opposite is true for you. That’s not to say you want to actively lose space, but you will want to consider how to create a more intimate general appearance in your home. Ceiling additions offer some of the best opportunities to do this.
Most notably, hanging light fittings can help to create the illusion of a lower, cosier overhead setup. Additions like ceiling beams, which you could either expose in your high ceiling or install artificial versions of, can also add a cottage-style cosy finish.
# 3 – Prioritise Proportions
It’s also worth simply thinking about the proportions of your furniture. After all, this space is always going to feel a little stark and unwelcoming if you pair high ceilings with tiny sofas or small tables.
By instead investing in larger furniture items like high and sizable sofa suites, or large coffee tables, you’ll do a far better job at making that space feel well-filled. You’ll still have plenty of space to play with, of course, but your furniture will look like it belongs here, rather than just perching on the edges of your interiors. And that’s going to make you feel far more at ease, and generally cosy, when you spend time here.
Large ceilings needn’t mean cold feelings. Simply implement these design pointers to create a cosy space regardless of room size.
