Check It Off: Moving-Day Chores You Can’t Forget

A man and woman pack stacks of cardboard boxes in a well-lit living room. A small dog sits between them.
Preparing to move into a new home? Your brain is probably abuzz with tasks, but don’t let these ones fall by the wayside. Write these chores down ASAP!

Moving day is a whirlwind of energy, filled with excitement and a million things to do. It’s easy to lose track and overlook important tasks that can mean the difference between a smooth transition and a massive headache! To help you stay on top of it all, here’s a checklist of the must-do chores to keep your move running smoothly.

Double-Check the Essentials

Before you load the first box, do a final walkthrough of your old place. Look in closets, cabinets, and storage areas for items you may have overlooked. This is also a great time to snap some photos of your empty home to document its condition.

Pack a moving-day survival kit. Include chargers, important documents, snacks, and a change of clothes so essentials are within easy reach during the transition. This way, you won’t have to dig through boxes when you need something right away.

Prep Your Car for the Trailer

If you’re hauling a rental trailer, your car needs to be ready for the added responsibility. Check your vehicle’s manual for its towing capacity beforehand to avoid overloading. Test the hitch and fasten it securely at the proper height.

Inspect your tires, including the spare, to make sure they’re properly inflated and free of damage. If possible, take the car and trailer for a short test drive to get a feel for how they handle together.

Label Like a Pro

Clear labels save tons of time when you have to unpack at your new place. Don’t just write “kitchen” or “bathroom” on every box; be more specific, like using “kitchen utensils” or “bathroom toiletries.” Colored tape or markers can make it even easier to sort boxes based on rooms.

It also helps to pack a box of items you’ll need immediately after arriving, like toilet paper, cleaning supplies, and a shower curtain. Mark this box as “open first” so it stands out and goes directly into the house.

Plan for Your Pets

Moving can be stressful for pets, so take steps to keep them calm throughout the day. Create a secure space where they can stay while the moving process unfolds, like a quiet room or a sturdy carrier. A favorite toy, blanket, or treat can help them feel more at ease.

If you’re traveling a long distance, pack a pet bag with food, water, medication, and waste bags for the trip. Update their ID tags and microchip information with your new address, just in case they wander off during the move.

Clean Before You Unpack

If your new home needs a quick refresh, take some time to clean before unloading the boxes. Wiping down counters, vacuuming floors, and scrubbing bathrooms will make unpacking less stressful. This also gives you a chance to see if anything needs fixing before furniture takes up every inch of space.

Moving day doesn’t have to feel overwhelming if you handle it with some preparation. Focus on checking off these must-do tasks, and you’ll keep things on track while avoiding unnecessary stress. Every little step you take now makes settling into your new home even sweeter later!
