Helping Your Teenager with Exam Stress

If your teenage son or daughter has important exams coming up within the next year or two, it’s important that you are prepared to help them manage the exam stress that comes along with it. Exam period is undeniably a tense time for young people, no matter how well they usually perform. As a parent, you are in a position to help ease the pressure, offering a shoulder to cry on should they need one, or just someone to help them revise. Read on for some additional tips from an independent college in London.

Reassure Them

The easiest way to alleviate some of the pressure from your child throughout their exam period is to remind them that their exam results are not the end of the world, although it may feel like it at the time. Do some research about different options after a levels, as well as the possibility of exam retakes, so that you can educate your child on what might happen if they do perform poorly in an exam. Let them know that as long as they are trying their best, you will be happy with them no matter what the outcome. Knowing that they will have your full support, even if they fail, and that there are various options available to them, will help them feel more at ease. After all, their physical and mental health is far more important than any exam result.

Your son or daughter will also need to know that they can come to you whenever they need to to talk about their emotions and if they’re struggling with anything. They will need to let off some steam every once in a while, as bottling up any intense emotions will lead to various health problems. If they do come to you for a chat, try not to turn them away, even if you’re busy. This will only deter them from coming to you in the future. Try and factor in some one-to-one time between the two of you once a day, as they may not feel comfortable opening up in front of the whole family.

Try and provide a positive, enthusiastic environment for your child during the exam period. It’s important to try and keep their spirits high so that they don’t fall into a slump. Make sure they’re getting enough sleep and plenty of exercise.
