Family mealtimes should be fun and relaxing, but when you’re really busy, you have no time to think of fancy meal ideas, the kids are getting tired and you just want to get something in them before bedtime, it can be anything but!
Luckily there are lots of simple things you can do to make family mealtimes more enjoyable right now, including the following:
If you want to enjoy spending time together at mealtimes, then you should absolutely ban all tech at the table so you can actually talk, and so that the kids are not overstimulated.
Get the kids involved
Getting every member of the family involved in the meal proper might seem like chaos waiting to happen, but actually, your kids will love helping out, and if you choose their tasks wisely, it won’t end in a kitchen that looks like it’s been hot by a grenade. What’s more, you’ll get more time to talk to them about their days, and they’ll be more likely to try food that they’ve had a hand in preparing too!
Try one new ingredient each week
If you are bored of the same old spag bol, mushroom risotto, and fish and chips that you have every week, but you simply don’t have the time or headspace to think of exciting new dishes to prepare for you all, try using one new ingredient each week.
For example, you could add a touch of sophistication to your mushroom risotto by adding a glug of truffle flavoured olive oil to the dish or you could make your spag bol taste a bit different by making it with lentils instead of beef mince. This will really help to prevent you all from getting bored with the same old meals each week.
If you’re really strapped for time and you want to be able to just come home and have dinner on the table without having to slave away over a hot stove, try batch cooking your family’s meals for the week ahead o Saturday or Sunday instead. That way, you can simply take your meals out of the freezer and heat them up without any effort at all, while still ensuring you all have a healthy meal to enjoy together.
Give everyone a chance to talk
Give everyone around the table an equal chance to say something positive about their day. This will ensure that everyone feels included in family mealtimes and that you end the day on a positive note. It can be very relaxing to simply sit and enjoy a bowl of pasta or your favourite sausage dish while your family chat and talk about fun thighs all around you, which is why family mealtimes are so important.
As you can see, it’s really easy to make family mealtimes more enjoyable for all of you, and it will be nice for you all to sit down and have a nice time together more often, so what are you waiting for?
