Periods – Surfing The Crimson Wave With Menstrual Cups

Menstruation - Eco friendly

Periods can be deeply unpleasant.  They can be messy, painful and sometimes they make us want to cry/scream/tear off other people’s heads.  Having been birthing the blood diamond since the early age of 11, I’m pretty well rehearsed in the whole period drama.  My fourteen-year-old also now regularly having her arts and crafts week at Panty Club.  What I’ve also found is that we’ve developed a synchronicity.  My youngest daughter turned 11 early this year.  It’s only matter of time before she starts flying her red flag.  The males in our household are going to seriously consider moving into the garage once this has happened.  If the youngest joins us in synching up, it’s entirely possible that the pets might also run screaming for more serene surroundings.

What About The Bloody Planet?

Bleached plastic sanitary towels and processed, bleached cotton (from cotton plants that are sprayed with harmful pesticides) are extremely damaging to not only our bodies but also the planet.  Despite this, most of us, in the UK, still choose the “convenience” of these products over a more economical, more sustainable option.  I think this is because people aren’t taught the impact of their decisions at an early enough age.

The Mighty Mooncup

I discovered the Mooncup a couple of years ago now and it’s a brilliant little thing.  It’s a menstrual cup made from medical grade, soft silicone.  The Mooncup contains no dyes, perfumes, BPA, phthalates, plastic, bleaches or toxins.  It doesn’t suck up any of your vaginal moisture, nor does it leave nasty fibres behind.

In the two years that I’ve been using my Mooncup, I’ve saved around £120 (based on spending £5 a month on sanitary products).

How Does It Work?

It’s not disgusting and it’s not difficult.  It’s quick, clean and simple.  All you need to do is tip the blood out, rinse it out then pop it back in.  Between periods, it’s best to sterilise it ready for next month (you can even pop it in the dishwasher).

The Bloody Truth

? The average blood loss in a period is between 2 tablespoons and half a cup ?

? Your menstrual cycle can span between 21 to 35 days ?

? Girls are born with all the eggs they will ever have throughout their lifetime ?

? Menstrual cramps can often feel like the early stages of labour ?

? Ironically, you will NOT be attacked by sharks because of your period if you swim in the ocean during your shark week ?

? In 1946, Walt Disney made a film called “The Story Of Menstruation” as an educational aid ?

? You can still get pregnant if you engage in intercourse during your period ?

? The average age a girl gets her period is 12 ?

Let’s bear in mind, whilst they can be unpleasant, let’s, not all start ovary acting.  They’re just periods; Period.

If you’re using a menstrual cup, good work!  If you don’t have one and would like to buy one, you can get them here.  I also have some reusable sanitary towels that I sometimes use.  I’ll tell you about those another time.  They’re pretty fab and vagina-friendly too.

As always, I’d love to hear your comments.  Thanks for reading,

  1. Never used a mooncup – watched a video actually this week on Buzzfeed about people trying several alternatives and I think the mooncup was amongst them. I don’t know if I feel brave enough for it but I certainly applaud the idea 😀

  2. I have a mooncup, and I think I’ve only managed to comfortably wear it a couple of times! They are a great invention though, and each month I tell myself I need to try again and master it haha. This has given me the push for next time!

I have read about these but have always been too scared to use them! What you saved is amazing though, might have to try them x

  4. Ok… I’ve ordered one! Done… there’s no going back now! My friend swears by them and always asks me if I’ve tried yet. As for syncing up I used to find that kind of strange, then all of us girls at work did! It was so funny the day we realised.
