There are some hobbies that parents are generally thrilled that their kids are getting into, and then there are those that are less appealing. Some of them you may not be sure of when your child says that they are interested in getting involved with them, but you have to try and put this behind you unless you have some very solid safety concerns.
It’s important to speak to your child about all your concerns and see if there is a way that you can talk safely with them, precautions you would like them to take and so on.
In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at some of these hobbies, and how you can manage them.
Contact Sports

Contact sports can be hard for parents to come to terms with. Some families absolutely love it when they hear that their child is getting involved with a sport like football, but others dread it due to the physical demands and injuries that have occurred in the past. We do understand your concerns here, but all possible safety precautions are taken for those who want to play contact sports. There is special safety equipment that is necessary and required for players to be allowed to play, and they are trained to play with minimal damage.
Of course there are going to be accidents and occurrences where injuries happen, but it’s a risk that they choose to take when they sign up for the sport. As long as they are taking their precautions, you’re just going to have to accept it if they love it.
Pets
This one might not be a hobby as such, but we suppose it depends on what pets you’re considering. This is always something they’re going to have to do with you, so it’s a conversation you should be having together. For example, they might want to look into something like bee keeping which means you need to purchase bees, set up a home for them in the garden, and go from there. But, this can be quite scary if you know nothing about it, so you should definitely do your research first before agreeing or not.
Gaming
There has been a lot written about gaming over the years, some of it true, some of it not true. Gaming is not the bad hobby that people are always making it out to be as long as you are limiting how long they are able to play, how much they can spend etc. It only becomes a problem when our child is constantly on their game at the detriment of everything else or spending all of their money on bo6 accounts or whatever. It’s fine, for as long as you monitor things like this.
Social Media Influencer

Finally, some social media influencers are so young nowadays that it is actually very strange to us who are older. We can understand the concern here because of safety, privacy and so on, but again, there are ways to counteract this. It’s something to look into if your child wants to get into social media, but maybe tell them you’re happy for them to do this when they are a little older if you feel they’re too young. Talk to them about it, explain your reasons and go from there.
It’s completely reasonable and normal to be concerned for your children, but that doesn’t mean that you should stop them from pursuing the things that they want to do. We understand that it’s your natural instinct to look after them, but once they hit a certain age you have to let them make their own decisions. More than that, you have to let them try out new things in life, no matter what you may think of them because it’s not your life at the end of the day.
