There comes a time in a lot of people’s lives when they want to move away and try somewhere new. If they have lived in the same area for many years, maybe from birth, it’s nice to live somewhere different and experience a new way of living – you could be moving from a beach town to a major city or from a city to a town.
When moving to a new area, there are plenty of considerations that you should check beforehand. What’s the crime rate like in the new area? Does the new area suffer from Radon? – You can check this using the UK Radon Map. What are the schools like in the area? What is there to do for fun? And so on.

What’s the crime rate like in the new area?
Checking the crime rate should be one of the first things you do before booking any viewings. An area may look safe from the outside, but when you do your research, you may find it has a high crime rate, which is not favourable. You can check the crime rate online and find people’s general opinion on social media channels like X. You could also reach out to a few groups on Facebook to see what their opinion is.
What are the schools like?
If you have children or are planning on having children in the future, then researching the local schools and their reputation is advised. The last thing you want to do is move to a new area to discover your local school has a bad reputation. Ofsted regularly visits schools, making it a good place to look if you’re after their ratings.
What is there to do for fun?
Take a moment to research the different things that you can do for fun in the area. Does it have a cinema? A leisure complex? Sports teams? Shops and restaurants? Are these within walking distance of your new potential home, or are you going to need to drive to them or get public transport if you don’t drive? Talking about public transport, this is also something you should look into, as if you rely on it, you want to make sure it’s reliable and fast. Having a train station nearby and a bus connection will be very useful, but having just one of them will most likely be sufficient.
