How To Become A Vegan

How To Become A Vegan

My daughter has lately been showing an interest in becoming a vegan.  Having completed Veganuary and continued on for being a vegan for some months following, I think I’m in a good position to advise her.  Here are my thoughts.

Go Vegan

Going Vegan

As a family, I think we eat too much meat.  As a country, we eat meat with almost every meal.  I was more okay with this when we were raising our own meat because I knew what they were fed, how they were treated and what happened at the end.  Going vegan can improve your health, improve the planet and reduce animal suffering.  With Brexit, the whole sentient law really worries me.  I am realistic about animals and I am capable of slaughtering and processing my own meat (I think I’d feel hypocritical if I couldn’t do it myself).  However,  I don’t want to be consuming meat if it’s being imported in from who knows where.  What will the life of those animals be like?  What will they be fed with, injected with?  Opens up a huge can of worms.

As I was doing Veganuary, the transition for me was immediate but you can ease yourself in slowly and that is possibly the easier way to go down this route.

Transitioning To Veganism

A great way to start is by switching some of your meals to vegan options.  Some of my favourite meals are shepherds pie made with lentils or falafel, for example.  If you’re switching out a few meals a week, you can gradually swap more and more until you’re eating all meat-free meals.

Learn as much as you can about veganism.  Look into the meat trade and get yourself motivated on your mission.

Get More Veg

Learn the best way to nourish your body.  It’s a good idea to look into nutritional testing to make sure your body is as healthy as it can be and that you’re not missing out on vital nutrients.

Start packing out your meals with foods such as whole grain, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds, and tofu.

When I was vegan, I was eating far healthier than I do now.  I actually miss my vegan diet!

Final Swaps

Other swaps that you’ll need to make are eggs and dairy.  Dairy is a simple swap, there are a variety of plant-based kinds of milk available in all supermarkets now.  Oat milk, rice milk, almond milk, soy milk, to name a few.  Vegan cheeses are plentiful and very delicious.  I especially like violife cheeses.  They make the best cheese toasties!

I really did enjoy following a vegan lifestyle but I got lazy.  For just one member of my family being a vegan, it meant I was constantly eating alone and cooking meals for one.  I was much healthier and I did really enjoy it.  Also, being a vegan is far more popular than when I did it so vegan foods are far more readily available.  I’ll definitely do Veganuary again.

Thanks for reading.
