The dream of a sustainable life in the great Australian outdoors was always soured when the quarterly energy bills arrived. Feeling like you were subject to the whims and vagaries of the volatile energy price market was a reminder that we had not escaped the clutches of the East Coast quite yet.

The penny – alright the cent – finally dropped when watching one of those YouTube videos you fall asleep to about the sun and the planets of the solar system. Mmmmm…..solar system.
Up above our heads blazing down 24/7 (ok you know what I mean) was the good old sun. And the video suggested that it was going to keep sending down its rays for several billion more years before it ran out of gas and turned into something called a red dwarf.
Starting to Nail It
Not waiting even till the morning Google was called up and a myriad of experts danced before my eyes when it came to an off grid solar system.
Fortunately, the company that we dealt with turned out to not just be experts in the field but the whole process proved to be far simpler than originally envisioned and while costs represented a fairly large initial outlay it was clear that we were going to be able to make considerable savings in the long run.
Confidence was good from the start after we completed an online form describing accurately and easily what our specific needs and requirements were. With four family members and the size of our house and shed we were able to explain exactly what our living arrangements were and what were our specific needs.
A basic quote came back expeditiously and this ultimately proved to be an accurate and fair assessment of costs. There were no hidden extras.
Nailing it
A six-kilowatt system was deemed to be the ideal set-up for our four-bedroom house and occupants. The off-grid experts were helpful and designed the system from top to bottom explaining about what did what and what batteries were needed to store those magical free rays provided from on high.
The system ended up being design-specific, not some generic system one-size-fits-all set up and this helped us to feel that we had ownership of the installation, that it was our baby.
Installation was quick and hassle-free and we are delighted with the results that effectively mean no more energy bills again and a path to a far greater sustainable life.
Though we still use outside power a little to power the truck, the regulated system has proved superb for lowering our carbon footprint even further than just power for the home.
Nailed!
Sustainable living feels great and with more disposable income for life’s better things – rather than energy bills – makes that feeling even better.
