For most of us, moving happens on the same day as we pick up our keys. If you’re buying a major project property, though, you might need to wait a little longer. Whether you’re staying with family in the interim or are choosing to rent while you create your dream home, moving day can feel tauntingly far in the future even once you have your keys.
But just how far into the future should that day be? After all, you want to move in and start your new life as soon as possible. Still, you don’t want to move in so quickly that you get in the way or find yourself amid messy renovations.
In truth, there’s no ‘right’ date to book that house removals company. There are, however, the following telltale signs that your move might finally be coming up.
Sign 1: You’ve Finished the Messy Jobs
Some renovation jobs are messier than others. Jobs like sanding, rewiring, and plastering, for instance, are a nightmare on the dust front. Moving in before these will only see you moving out again, and having to take most of your furniture with you.
However, if you’ve completed all of these messy tasks, it’ll be far easier to move in. That’s not to say you won’t still need to get out the dust sheets for finishing touches like painting, but it does, at least, mean you won’t need to take your belongings away again anytime soon.
Sign 2: Your Vision is Coming Together
When you purchased that project property, the chances are that you had a pretty strong vision for how you would like it to be in terms of the rooms you could imagine changing and the walls you wanted to lose.
Unfortunately, bringing these visions to reality can often involve stripping things back to empty walls and bare floorboards. None of which make an ideal living environment. However, if you’re beginning to see your vision come together, especially in high-traffic rooms, then you might just find that it’s time to move in. You don’t need to wait until you’re literally painting those walls, but you will want to make sure that things like kitchen renovations, layout changes, and other major work are finished and coming to fruition by moving day.
Sign 3: You Can’t Wait Any Longer
Sometimes, you may also move into a project property because you simply can’t wait any longer, or perhaps the lease on your rental is coming to an end.
If this is the case, then you may find yourself moving into a property that’s not quite up to living standards. Overcome this issue by using things like dust sheets and safety gates to block off unusable areas. Make sure, too, that you’re able to get out of the house to ensure that major works can still go ahead as they need to.
Putting your moving day on hold for a project property is always difficult, but these three signs could all suggest it’s time to take the moving leap at last.
