3 Tips for Reducing Stress in Your Everyday Life

Stress, when all is said and done, can be a real killer.

It’s one thing to feel a bit daunted from time to time, or even to have the occasional extreme situation that gets you completely worked up, but that you have to face up to, anyway. It’s another thing altogether to feel chronically worn down, pushed to the limit, cornered, and assaulted from all angles.  Reducing stress is very important.

Chronic stress wrecks your mood, damages your physical health, diminishes your mental function, and robs you of your energy. In other words, you really don’t want to live in a chronically stressed state.

Here are a few tips for reducing stress in your everyday life.

 

  • Go easy on the stimulants, and look into using smart herbal supplements

Stress isn’t just something intangible that happens “in your mind.” When you feel stressed, your body is releasing certain hormones – most notably the “stress hormone” cortisol.

Cortisol is an essential hormone, and without it you would die. But too much of it can destroy you, too.

When your cortisol levels are chronically elevated, your brain and organs are damaged, your immune system is ruined, your digestion suffers, your other hormones are thrown into disarray, and things just go from bad to worse.

These days, we often don’t do ourselves many favours when it comes to maintaining healthy cortisol levels. For one thing, many of us regularly abuse stimulants like caffeine in order to get through the day – and, as you might have guessed, these stimulants significantly boost cortisol.

Try to go easy on the espresso, and look into using smart herbal supplements to keep your stress hormone levels properly balanced. “Adaptogens,” in particular, are a class of herbal supplements that are known to be very effective at balancing cortisol and other related hormones.

  • Guard your energy and time, and outsource certain tasks

You are only one person, and you only have so much time and energy at your disposal in any given day.

One consequence of this is that overloading yourself with an abundance of tasks and projects can spread you too thin, and can lead to you as existing in a state of chronic stress.

  • Reduce petty distractions, and focus your attention more carefully

There is some evidence that, when people try to multitask, they become dramatically more stressed, and become significantly less effective at each thing they were actually trying to achieve.

More than that, though; there is some research to suggest that even just trying to focus on more than one thing at a time, in general, leads to significantly elevated stress levels.

Instead of trying to watch a movie, while filling in spreadsheets, while talking on the phone, do one thing at a time. Reduce petty distractions, and focus your attention carefully on things that are worth focusing on.
