How to Go Green at Home without Sacrificing Comfort

How to Go Green at Home without Sacrificing Comfort

The problems that plague the environment are common knowledge these days. Many people want to help, but also want to continue living with the comforts of modern life. The words “going green” often conjure images of sacrificing conveniences and roughing it. You can go that route if you really want to, but it’s not a requirement.

You can live a greener lifestyle and keep your electronics, indoor climate control, and vehicle. It’s all matter of making better choices about what you use and how much you consume.

  • Go Off-Grid and Solar Energy at Home

This one is especially close to the hearts of Connect Electric. Solar energy is the way of the future. It’s renewable and, once you have a system installed, completely free to generate. Solar panels are low maintenance and have a lifespan of over 20 years.

Going off-grid means you won’t be consuming energy that’s produced using fossil fuels. If you aren’t ready to go completely off-grid, you can use a hybrid system that generates energy and lets you stay connected.

  • Unplug Devices When You Aren’t Using Them

Electronic devices continue drawing power when they are not on. If it’s plugged in, it can pull electricity. That’s energy you aren’t using at all. It’s a complete waste and will increase your utility bills.

Unplug as much as you can around your house. That includes entertainment electronics, kitchen appliances, and anything else that plugs in.

  • Switch to Energy Efficient Appliances

Buying all new appliances is expensive. If you want to go green, you can do so gradually. When it’s time to replace an old appliance, make sure you choose an energy-efficient model. You can look for the Energy Star label on the package.

  • Make Your Next Vehicle an Electric or Hybrid Model

Another great way to go green is through transportation. Look for electric or hybrid vehicles the next time you are in the market for a new car. These have improved significantly in recent years and can save you a lot of money in fuel costs.

Electric cars have fewer moving parts, which means they typically require less maintenance over the life of the vehicle.

  • Introduce a Little Self-Sufficiency to Your Life

You can become more self-sufficient and reduce your reliance on mass-produced items. If you can make it at home, then you’ll be eliminating some of the pollution produced through distribution.

A good way to start is to grow a garden. If you have space and your area allows it, you can also raise chickens for eggs. As an alternative, you can start shopping at local farmers markets so everything you consume is locally made.

  • Look for Ways to Reduce and Reuse

Take any opportunity you can to reduce and reuse. Repair a garment with a tear or lost button rather than replacing it. Cut down your time in the shower so your water heater uses less energy. Choose reusable containers to store leftovers rather than putting them in one-time use kitchen bags.

There are many ways that you can go green while still enjoying the comforts of modern life. Get everyone in your household involved and find ways to increase the positive impact these changes will have on the planet.
