Ways to Go Green On Your Next Home Remodel

It’s crucial for everyone to do their bit when it comes to the health of the planet, and by making your home greener and more energy-efficient, that’s exactly what you can do. We must take care of the earth for ourselves and for future generations. Yet it can seem like a daunting task to have to change the way we do things and reimagine our homes to become more eco-friendly. This is why, when you’re going to remodel the place anyway, it’s the ideal time to make these critical changes without becoming confused or frustrated. You’re making changes anyway, so they may as well be green ones. Read on to find out precisely what you can do.

Convert Your Power Source

Possibly one of the most significant changes you can make when you’re updating and upgrading your home is to change its power source. Right now, it’s likely you’re using standard gas, electricity, and water – much like the majority of other people. But what if you could make some changes in this regard that would help not just the planet but your pocket too?

By switching to solar heating, for example, or by starting to collect rainwater to be re-used around the home, you are saving energy, being kind to the environment, and saving money. Even if it costs you to get this work done, you should be able to make your money back.

Buy Used

If you’re changing your entire look in your home, then you’ll be tempted to go out and buy new items to have there, such as new furniture, new household appliances, new paint or wallpaper or tiles, and so on. This is the common thing to do, and it’s sure to be the first thing that comes to mind.

However, if you can buy used, then once again, you’ll be saving money (unless you start to purchase antiques, although the choice will always be yours), plus there will be less going to landfill. This is even more true if you’re able to sell or give away your current items and not throw them in the trash.

You can also repair broken items and keep using them if that would suit. You can buy all kinds of spare parts online, and no matter if you need stuffing for an old armchair or Simpson clothes dryer parts, or anything else, you’ll be able to find what you need. Repair and recycle is the greenest option.

Buy Energy Efficient Appliances

In some cases, you will need to buy new appliances. At some point, repairing old ones becomes too difficult and too expensive, or perhaps you’re moving into your first home, and you don’t have anything to put in there at all just yet.

If this is the case and you find you do need to buy entirely new items, then make sure they are as energy-efficient as possible. This is good for the environment, as you are using less energy overall, and it’s a cheaper way to run a home too.
